Sorry I haven’t posted in ages. I don’t know where the time is going?
‘Wedding Season’ is fast approaching, and as a Wedding Makeup Artist in Bowness it seems I am jam packed with Bridal Makeup Trials.
A trial is when my ‘bride to be’ comes to have a chat and practise run before the big day. Not everyone opts for this as they simply don’t have time, but I would say 90% of my brides do.
Trials with Makeup by Polly, Wedding Makeup Artist in Bowness
Having a trial means I know exactly what you want on the big day, and you know exactly what you are going to get. It makes the wedding morning relaxed and easy as we have met, so are at ease and you can relax knowing you were happy at the trial.
At the trial itself you are welcome to bring some pictures of what you like in terms of makeup. It gives me a good starting point on colours and how strong or natural to go. Also the name TRIAL means we can try different things. Ultimately by the end of it, I want you to still look like you, just the best version of you. I might think some black eyeliner looks fab, but if it just isn’t you then let’s not try that. You need to feel as comfortable and confident as possible.
Here are some phone snaps (excuse poor quality) of some #bridestobe2017 who have had their trials in the past couple of weeks.
If you are interested in booking a trial with a Wedding Makeup Artist in Bowness, I travel throughout Cumbria so please get in touch. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org
Bex Dixon was so lucky at her Winter wedding as the Sun shone so bright we actually needed to close the curtains whilst she got ready!
The Abbey House Hotel Barrow was such a gorgeous venue for a winter wedding, as all the Christmas Decorations were up and it felt so magical.
Bex wrote these words for my website:
Your knowledge and skills are evident in the work you do. We all loved our make up for my wedding yesterday. The airbrush foundation was perfect and lasted all day- I didn’t want to take it off!
These lovely photographs are courtesy of www.jameshicksphotography.co.uk taken at Ashley’s wedding at The Daffodil Hotel Grasmere.
Ashley’s personality shone so bright when I met her on her wedding day, she was so friendly and easy to work with. We had a laugh over email when she described the look she wanted, we finally came up with this concept:
“Flawless coverage and a fair amount of makeup but to look fresh and elegant rather than ‘The Only Way is Essex!’
Then disaster struck….. the day before ‘THE BIG DAY’ Ashley was struck down with a coldsore. She messaged me in panic, but I told her not to worry and that I would bring my magic wand. So I lied, I don’t have a magic wand – but I do have an airbrush makeup gun! This is when I apply a silicone based makeup through my airgun which goes on in a fine mist and you can go as light as you like – or in Ashley’s case heavy where we needed to cover her unwanted new friend!
From the pictures I think my ‘magic wand’ worked!
In December I went on an excellent bridal makeup course in London at the Illamasqua School of Makeup to train as an Indian Wedding Makeup Artist so that I can now offer this service in the Lake District.
People seem shocked that I still undertake courses, but I think with any job you never stop learning and there are always new products and techniques to learn about. I am willing to invest in making sure that I am the best and offer a superior service. There are too many people offering their services as professional makeup artists but they simply haven’t undertaken professional training.
The course specialised in retro makeup covering the 1940’s and 50 and Indian Wedding Makeup. Here’s a pic of my work on the course.
Here’s a before and after pic of the lovely Vicki who got married at Bristowe Hill Keswick. She was my first wedding of 2017. Vicki has kindly sent me this testimonial:
Wow is all I can say Polly – you did an incredible job, not only for me, but for my two bridesmaids. Having had my first MUA let me down (very last minute), I was extremely stressed out at finding an alternative who could get me the look I wanted and be available so last minute.
I needn’t have worried – from the first contact, Polly was extremely personable, positive and put me at ease. She understood my requirements and talked me down from the ledge. From being available last minute, travelling (extremely) early, and being a great calming influence the morning of the wedding is not to take away from the fact this lady has skills and then some!
She worked across a variety of skin types and colourings, and frankly made all of us look fabulous and better than I certainly ever thought I could look. She also found the perfect pinky nude lipstick for me, and gave me a tube for top-ups for the rest of the day.
Not only that, but the make-up lasted the whole day; I was frankly sad to take it off at the end of a perfect day.
Thanks so much Polly – while I could have done without the stress of an initial letdown elsewhere, clearly things happen for a reason, as you’ve made this bride feel like a princess for a day (and I know my two bridesmaids feel the same way about their make-up). I can’t thank you enough. Pictures to follow once available xx
I just got these great photographs back from Sue Yardley who had a wonderful wedding day in October at Bashall Barn Clitheroe.
She was kind enough to write me this testimonial:
I found Polly from her website and as I was getting married nowhere near my home I was conscious of finding someone that would be great at make up but also be a positive part of the wedding morning.
From going and meeting Polly for the trial she was so friendly from the outset and made me feel really relaxed! Every girl has bits about their face they are conscious of and Polly was fantastic at understanding this without making me feel awkward and worked with me to make sure I was 100% happy.
I gave Polly some feedback about what I liked and bits I was unsure of and she explained why she had done it and gave me the option to change. As the specialist she explained her reasoning without patronising and making me feel uncomfortable. For example not too much under eye highlighter so it doesn’t show up on the photographs as bright white!
I would highly recommend Polly and so would my whole bridal party…my mother in law wasn’t going to get her make up done and after seeing myself and all the bridesmaids she changed her mind on the morning and Polly happily accommodated!
Thank you Polly!!!

This gorgeous bride Claire at Cote How was your typical Australian, relaxed, laid back and easy going.
So my job was impossible.
Ha, just kidding, she was a dream to work with. Her style is very simple and natural and she wanted this look to travel through to her hair and makeup.
Cote How is a beautiful setting and with her natural look I wanted Claire to look fresh, young and glow with flawless skin.
I used a very light foundation on her skin as she has a great completion, added lots of pink to her cheeks and lips with subtle rose pinks and earthy tones on her eyes.
In these lovely photographs she has sent me she looks simply and effortlessly beautiful.
If you want to tell me about your upcoming wedding and have some ideas about makeup, let’s chat. My email is email@example.com or my contact form is here.

I love these pictures from my July bride Lisa at Askham Hall Penrith taken by jesspetrie.com. Jess really captures the magic and detail that went into the day.
Lisa literally glows in her wedding pictures, I’d love to take the credit for that, but I would say that some of it is down to her sheer joy and happiness of the day!
Lisa wanted good coverage on her skin and I used Illasmaqua skin base foundation with Illamasqua primer.
Illamasqua are high end brand that launched in 2008. You may have seen them in Selfridges if you are lucky enough to shop in a big city! That comes from me the country girl (me!) who has to oder everything online!
Illamasqua they are cruelty and free and vegan products which have NEVER and will NEVER be tested on animals. This is a big attraction to the brand and I get more and more requests from people regarding this. So much so, I have booked a course at Illamasqua next month to learn from their professionals and extend my kit using their products.

Faye got married at Leeming House Penrith in August. I love the first picture above, it’s just what you would hope a wedding morning would be. All the girls chatting, getting ready, while the hair and makeup professionals do their thing!
Faye was a relaxed bride and at her trial wanted to be very natural and subtle as she’s not a huge makeup wearer.
However on the day I did one of her bridesmaids first, with a smokey eye (using brown earthy colours) and some extra individual false lashes and Faye decided she wanted to have that too.
I think the phrase ‘smokey eye’ makes people think about the girls from ‘The Only Way is Essex’, however it’s just the name of the technique, you can do it in any colour and as subtle as you wish.
So for Faye with her fair skin and strawberry hair with bright blue eyes I used brown and gold tones, the extra lashes as to look as natural as possible but really make her eyes stand out without being too ‘made up’ don’t you think?
The other thing is, when you have makeup on with jeans and a cotton top, some people can feel quite over the top. But once the princess dress goes on, and the hair is styled and the diamonds are sparkling makeup some people feel they want more makeup.
As I always say, there’s no right or wrong.
The most important thing is for you to feel great, if that means hardly any makeup that you want to do yourself or lots of false lashes applied by mean, it’s fine AS LONG AS YOU ARE HAPPY x

Megan married Fraser in Keswick at the stunning wedding venue that is, Armathwaite Hall. She kindly sent me some of her wedding pics through recently which I thought I should share with you. I hope you enjoy looking at them.
She also sent me these beautifully kind words,
Thank you so much again. I’ve never felt so beautiful in my entire life and I couldn’t have been happier with my makeup. It was better than I dreamt of.
My bridal party looked so fantastic too. You did the most perfect job.
Thank you so so much.
To receive feedback like that means the world to me, so thank you so much Megan.
Megan had the full works – airbrush makeup, smokey eye, false lashes…. In writing that sounds like a lot doesn’t it? But take a look at her pics… she looks beautiful and natural doesn’t she? It just goes to show that makeup is all about technique, skill, knowledge and using the right products on the right person. What suits one, doesn’t always suit another.
The main things I like to achieve are:
But for me, the most important thing I can take away from Megan’s wedding is that she felt fabulous. What more could I achieve?
